Virginia Legislators Join Growing Chorus of Elected Officials Questioning Verizon
Virginia Delegate Joseph Morrissey joined elected officials from an increasing number of states questioning why Verizon, a company raking in billions in profits, has so little regard for the communitites in which Verizon operates.
“I find it terribly unfortunate that a company that has made $12 billion in two years would cut 1,000 jobs,” said Morrissey. “Good companies concentrate on making profit for their shareholders but they’re mindful of keeping people employed in their communities.”
Morrissey joins the New York State Assembly Speaker and the New York City Public Advocate, as well as members of both chambers of the New Jersey legislature in calling on Verizon to act responsibly.

Verizon Workers Take Action in Richmond
Despite making $4.3 billion in profits this year alone, greedy Verizon executives are putting American workers on the streets for the holidays.
“What we’re asking Verizon to do is to simply live up to their responsibility and be a leader in this troubled economy,” said CWA Local 2201 Executive Vice President Richard Hatch.
Morrisey has it absolutely correct: Sure, Verizon has a responsibility to its shareholders, and no one expects Verizon to operate at a loss. But when you’re a company making billions of dollars in this economy, and in an environment in which taxpayers are funding substantial amounts of your operation, don’t you think you should at least give a passing thought to the communities on which you are wreaking havoc?

I lost my job last year when my company could not sustain the lack of consurmer confidence in our struggling economy. The decsion to cut jobs was coming and expected because my former company was operating at a loss. In that instance, my former company should have been more proactive and cut jobs long ago.
However, Verizon is a communcations company who is only profiting and growing in bad economic times. In fact, their wireless business is near recession proof in that cell phones have become an utility for most people. It only makes sense for a company the size of Verizon, who is seeing profit in this horrible economc climate, help our economy and themselves by pumping money back into the economy thus resulting in more consumers of their services. The economy is a cipher and Verizon is trying to stop the movement.
It’s a shame that the leader in services and the most expensive service provider is laying people off? We have all Verizon services here in my home, FiOS, cells, landline, & interNET! I pay $150.00 a month or my Verizon cell phone alone Premium plan w/VZ Nav & visual v/m when others offer services for 1/3rd the cost and why??? I have been with them since it was Bell Atlantic land & mobile service but why the high prices and why the lay offs????

I am a shareholder and I believe Verizon has a major responsibility to it’s future which I see as taking care of it’s workforce. Take care of your employees and they will take care of your customers and your business will succeed. This has been working, so why the plans to mess up?
